When you think about it, winter is a much better time than summer to be sampling red wines. Many new releases are coming out, and it's red-wine weather. Individual varietals that are ideal for cold weather vary greatly, but winter is the season to enjoy the fullest-bodied wines. - However, they should be balanced and bold.
Richer, heartier winter meals taste best with very flavorful wines of significant depth and complexity. Even without food these wines wrap around you like a warm blanket in front of a roaring fire on a frigid winter’s day.
Here are some of the best winter reds from around the world that having us licking my lips in anticipation.
A vibrant, bright and youthful purple hued wine. Gorgeous aromas on the nose, with cherry pie and coffee, and a layer of buttery, toasty oak in the background. Packed with great cherry and summer fruits on the palate, with firm, rounded tannins and fine acidity. Great structure.
This is a very straightforward Amarone with classic dreid fruit character. Viscous and satisfying on the palate it displays bakng spice aromas framed nicely by subtle wood notes of vanilla and brioche. Enjoy this bold red with braised meats and polenta.
