2005 – Arguably the Best Vintage in a Generation

According to Allen Meadows of Burghound.com – The Preeminent Reviewer of Burgundy

True Genius or Inspired Marketing?

“Let’s cut directly to the chase while passing Go– 2005 is quite simply the best top to bottom vintage that I have ever seen, period, full stop. Yes, understand perfectly well that is a bold and heavy-duty statement but there it is in all its unequivocal nakedness. 2005 is a brilliant vintage with virtually nothing to dislike and here is the key point; it’s also great from top to bottom. Moreover, in terms of regional and villages wines, 2005 is so good that it blows the next closest recent contender, 1999, right out of the water. Among the 1ers and grands crus, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1999, 2001 and 2002 all produced some wines that are wonderfully impressive and certainly great, indeed in certain cases a full-on match for their 2005 counterparts. But in terms of the sheer number of great wines, 2005 surpasses all of them in my view. I can also report that many domaines made the best wines that I have ever seen from them. And I’m not talking about some second or third tier domaines enjoying a recent resurgence, I’m talking about the cream of Burgundy in most cases. In short, mortgage your house, sell your dog, hock your spouse (but don’t forget where, you’ll eventually need someone to enjoy these wines with!) or do whatever you have to do but don’t miss the best wines of the vintage or you will I believe live to regret it. Finally, just to be sure that I have your attention, the 2005s are the best wines since the magnificent 1978s and the best news of all? Unlike 1978, there are a LOT more great ‘05s to be had.” Allen Meadows – Burghound.com

1) Domaine Alain Burguet Gevrey-Chambertin 1Er Cru Champeaux

Type: Gevrey-Chambertin

Size|750ML     Vintage|2005     SKU|7805

This is definitely one for the cellar. Soon after its release, I logged these notes: spicy red and black plum, violet aromas on a muscular frame with full, rich fruit flavors and a well-textured finish. Closed up tightly now but will handsomely reward 5-10 years of cellaring.

2) Dubreuil-Fontaine Pommard 1Er Cru Epenots

Type: Pommard

Size|750ML     Vintage|2005     SKU|7733

Deep cherry red color, classic Burgundian Pinot Noir aromas followed by pure sweet and brambly without the normal barnyard often associated with this appellation. This is a beautifully regal and voluptuous wine, with tart sweet cherry, considerably tannic with great balancing acidity. Everything about this wine is primary; I can’t wait for the secondary nuance and complexity to show itself in 5-8 years!

A bit of wood toast sets off the black and blue berry fruit aromas as well as the supple, forward, generous and notably sweet flavors that offer excellent volume, all wrapped in a sappy and mouth coating finish of impressive intensity and punch. “This is quite ripe yet the red and dark berry fruit aromas are airy and pure with an abundant earthiness present on the rich, serious and rather brooding middle weight flavors supported by excellent dry extract and ripe structural elements on the solidly long finish. Very good quality here for a villages level wine.” Allen Meadows - Burghound
