Bartolo Mascarello made his wines the same way throughout his life the same way his father Giulio had, and now his daughter Marie-Theresa continues the tradition. It’s a continuum of tradition and uncompromising quality. No bells or whistles just REAL WINES. This is winemaking history, no, world history. Some of the most sought after wines in the world, these ultra-traditional, highly idiosyncratic wines take years to reach their soaring potential but handsomely reward the patient.
94pts RP A striking bouquet of cinnamon, balsam wood, roses, tar, minerals, and cherry liqueur. There is good acidity, a broad, full-bodied, super-concentrated palate, and tell-tale truffle, leather, and herb notes.
93pts RP Mascarello's 1999 Barolo is a brilliant effort, offering a perfumed, elegant nose and lovely notes of red cherry fruit, menthol and minerals that flow onto the palate in a display of extraordinary purity."
92pts RP ".. one of the most quirky and idiosyncratic wines on the market. Initially soft and delicate, with air, tastings reveal a wine that has put on considerable weight, completely changing its personality to a big, structured Barolo."
Mascarello's 2003 Barolo reveals expressive, perfumed, high-toned aromatics along with ripe red cherries, menthol and licorice in an expression of this wine that is unusually rich, while maintaining remarkable freshness for the vintage. 92 Points Antonio Galloni-Wine Advocate
92pts "A weightless, ethereal Barolo, it reveals notable freshness and supple tannins on the long, finessed finish. Although I have tasted this wine many times from cask. I first encountered it from bottle at a blind tasting where it was immediately recognizable for its style, purity and class. This is the best young Barolo I have tasted here in many a year. Fans of traditional Barolo won't want to miss this superb effort." Antonio Galloni-Wine Advocate
This is glorious - it smells of roses, saddle leather, mushrooms, toffee and rhubarb. The tannins are resolved and the tertiary flavors have come to the fore. A classy, wily old gentleman.
The 1989 Barolo reveals a huge, classic bouquet of rose petals, intermingled with scents of super-ripe black and red fruits, earth, and a whiff of tar. The wine is powerful, rich, and exceptionally well-balanced, with magnificent concentration. A brilliant effort! 96 points Robert Parker
The 1990 Barolo offers a mature nose of roses, leather, tobacco, cedar and coffee with sweet dark fruit and earthy notes in an irresistibly ethereal style. Medium-bodied and delicate, it shows plenty of supporting structure. 94 Points Antonio Galloni-Wine Advocate
Her pure, finessed 2004 Barolo offers a compelling array of perfumed violets, dark cherries and baking spices with superb clarity and delineation. A weightless, ethereal Barolo, it reveals notable freshness and supple tannins on the long, finessed finish. 95 Points Robert Parker
Maria Theresa Mascarello's 2007 Barbera d'Alba San Lorenzo shows rich red fruit, underlying licorice, leather and wonderfully silky tannins that make this one a pleasure to enjoy now but there is enough here to reward the patient.
Never opulent or overdone, the 2007 Bartolo Mascarello Dolcetto d'Alba Vigne Monroniolo-Rue is a study in a mineral driven style. Ample black and blue fruits reside on an equal level with damp earth and impeccably balncing acidity. The nose is mesmerizing.
Dolcetto, in general, is an attractive ruby red in color with big, bold ripe fruit flavors. What separates Mascarello's Dolcetto from others is the purity of its soul.
